It may be a bit surprising to find out that we have all had episodes of snoring at some time of our lives. As a matter of fact, snoring is so common that we all know of someone who does it. There are many occasions when we see it as a source of amusement at the sufferer’s expense, even though it is a member of our own family.

But when all the joking and laughter is done it may surprise us to find out what causes these bouts, how dangerous it could be as a result, and what to do to  stop snoring.

So why do we snore?

There are 6 main reasons for why we snore:

  1. Hereditary: This noisy malady is sometimes handed down through family traits of which there is hardly anything we can do to correct.
  2. Physical Abnormalities: Over-grown tonsils and adenoids can, usually do, contribute to the problem.
  3. Gender: Yes, don’t be surprised but the question of whether you are male or female does have something to do with whether you snore or not. Scientific research have proven this by showing that males tend to snore more than females.
  4. Age: Without doubt, the older we get the more we snore. There is no doubt that the older one gets the less toned they become. It is because of this growing looseness of muscle around the throat and air passage that can lead to snoring.
  5. Illness and/or Allergies: Some sicknesses and allergies result in the swelling of the tissues in the nasal passage and reduce the air flow through the nasal cavity. This ultimately leads to snoring and, as a result, suffering through a very restless night’s rest. Sleep apnea is another serious medical condition that can, and often do, cause serious bouts of snoring. This sickness actually causes the victim to stop breathing while asleep, causing a sudden noisy gulp of air that is sometimes severe enough to wake up the victim from sleep.
  6. Bad Habits: Some of our bad social habits have rendered us vulnerable to medical issues that also contribute to the problem. These include bad eating habits that eventually lead to being overweight and out of shape. Then there is the history of smoking, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and even bad sleeping posture.

Making “minor” changes to our lifestyles would certainly take care of the problems created by bad habits. The tougher habits, like drug abuse, alcoholism and smoking, could be a bit harder to deal with and would need the assistance of health professionals to overcome.

If we snore when we sleep on our backs then it is a simple matter of turning to our sides to eliminate the sleeping posture problem.

The problem caused by gender and increasing age can have less effect if simple exercises are done on a fairly regular basis.

There is nothing much that can be done when we get sick except to take the prescribed medication and allow nature to do the rest. However, the choice of medication can, and do, determine how the affected tissues would respond to the passage of air through the nasal passage.
