Young and old suffer from snoring and the unfortunate thing is that this condition keeps them and their cohabitants from getting the sleep they need. In fact snoring affects up to 20% of infants, 30% of women and 45% of men. One of the main causes of snoring is sleep apnea, a condition which effects up to four percent of middle aged American men and up to two percent of middle aged American women. Suffers of sleep apnea usually also suffer from snoring; however the thing is that sleep apnea is a serious condition that cannot be ignored.

If you suffer from snoring you might be wondering exactly what all your options are. There are several options out there. The first thing one should do is giving up harmful drugs, sedatives as well as alcohol and smoking. Many have found that with the help of certain devices (like snoring chin straps) and altering certain things in their life (like changing their sleeping position) they were able to ease or eliminate their snoring problem.

Others found that by using a CPAP machine they were able to eliminate their sleep apnea problem and with it the snoring symptoms. However for some people the only solution and last resort was to undergo snoring surgery. You might think it’s crazy to submit yourself for an operation just to overcome snoring. The truth is that this is not at all crazy when you consider the serious health complications that can come as an effect of sleep apnea and snoring.

There are four different types of sleep apnea surgery that can be performed. The first is called uvulopalatopharnygoplasty. This surgical operation is for those who have issues with the soft palate. During this operation, surgeons remove part of the soft palate known as the uvula. This surgery might actually be done in conjunction with other surgeries as well to ensure a clear passage way in the throat.

Another type of sleep apnea surgery that can be done is called hyoid suspension. During this operation a surgeon works on a bone in the neck, known as the hyoid bone. This bone is situated in the area near the tongue base and is surrounded by several muscles. In this procedure the surgeon take this bone and attaches it to the thyroid cartilage, thus opening up a passage way so that you can breathe easy at night.

A third type of surgery for sleep apnea sufferers is known as genioglossus advancement, also known as GGA. This intervention entails taking the tongue tendon and tightening it. This procedure on its own is not enough and it is usually carried out in conjunction with the uvulopalatopharnygoplasty operation mentioned before.

Last but not least comes an intervention known as maxillomandibular advancement, otherwise known as MMA. During this procedure the upper and lower jaw are moved forward. The soft tissue in the throat moves forward with the jaws, thus opening the air passage way. For some people, this is the only way to go.

Recovery for the above operation can be pretty long, notwithstanding the fact that the above interventions can be fairly expensive. Unfortunately a surgical operation can be the only means of overcoming your snoring problem. However when you think that such an intervention can help you cure your snoring and with it the many sleepless nights and the frustration of those who live with you, an operation might be worth doing in the end. So, if you have tried everything to cure your snoring and none worked, talk to your doctor about the possibility of having snoring surgery.
