Why Routine Can Be A Cure For Insomnia

by anonymous user on July 23, 2010

When you suffer from insomnia the quest for anything that will make you sleep can take over your life. The curious thing is, that simply the fact of having sleeping problems can cause you to sleep even worse, preventing you from finding that elusive cure for insomnia.

When you worry about not falling asleep – your worry makes you anxious and simply cannot relax. Instead of winding down towards the evening you start thinking about your insomnia, you see in your mind how you are going to lie awake when you go to bed ….

You already know that when you wake up tomorrow morning you’ll be shattered ….

You start figuring out how little sleep you’ve had lately ….

Recognize this scenario?

If it has, then relax. It’s not uncommon!

In fact, sleep researchers say that one of the first casualties of sleeping problemsis your ability to relax. And if you can’t relax it makes it much more difficult to prepare your body for sleep. Most of us – the majority – can’t  fall asleep as if flicking a switch. Yes, it is true that there are people that just fall asleep, as compared to those that toss  and turn for hours before finally dropping off .

Natural sleepers can relax in the evening and slow down their minds and their bodies, disciplining their thoughts and relaxing their muscles.

But most of us can’t, we need to learn how to unwind. Luckily this is not difficult to learn. It’s not hard and you can do it straight away.

Here are two basic tips that could be all you need, in effect these tips comprise a “beginners guide to a” cure for insomnia:

  • Don’t drink coffee or alcohol for about 2-4 hours before bedtime and try to establish a pattern of “winding down” each evening, planning the next day. When you finally get into bed you won’t then lie there thinking about the next day , worrying about  bills or shopping or what else to do – it has already been taken care of !
  • Establish a routine going to bed and getting up at the same time. Contrary to myth you can’t “store up” sleep, you can, however, catch up on missing sleep . So even if you feel really tired one morning, get up anyway , don’t nap during the day and you will most probably fall asleep quicker the next night.

This obviously will only help if you suffer from mild insomnia – if you have a severe sleeping problem then you will need a more sophisticated cure for insomnia!
