Anti Snoring Mouthpiece
Anti snoring mouthpieces, also known as anti snoring dental devices, all try to reach the same goal – to stop your snoring problem. Anti snoring mouthpieces work by keeping your mouth in the proper position, thus, stopping the throat tissues from vibrating and letting you achieve the normal way of breathing. The anti snoring mouthpieces prevent the soft throat tissues from collapsing and obstructing the airway when you sleep. The mouthpieces do this easily by bringing your lower jaw forward or by lifting your soft palate or both. Some of these devices also work by preventing the tongue from going far down the throat.
These anti snoring mouthpieces are very effective to people who suffer from mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. These dental gadgets are based on mandibular advancement and are scientifically designed and studied. The anti snoring mouthpieces are generally made up of plastic and can be easily worn in your mouth. The dental devices are mostly custom-made, although there are certain brands that are made of soft material that can mould any mouth shape. Some mouthpieces are designed to be heated up and moulded (known as boil and bite), similar to a sports gum shield.
Most snoring mouthpieces are relatively cheap compared to other devices you can buy if you buy of the shelf regular ones. You can have them individually made but of course at a cost. The specialized mouth piece will be made based on a mould taken directly from the patient’s mouth. These mouthpieces are significantly more expensive, up to $3000. However, they are guaranteed to fit a patient’s mouth perfectly.
Unfortunately anti snoring mouthpieces can take some getting used to. Some users of anti snoring mouthpieces experience side effects such as surplus salivation, shifting of teeth positions and other tooth and mouth problems. So it is very important that you consult your dentist before you go for any such device. Anti snoring mouthpieces are also not suitable for sufferers of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, those with insufficient teeth to support the device, or periodontal problems likely to cause tooth mobility.
If the mouthpiece doesn’t help you stop snoring, your options for scientifically proven ways to stop snoring are dwindling. A better alternative to a mouthpiece might be an anti snoring chin strap. Otherwise you may need to consult with your doctor about stop snoring therapies. For many people, some therapy will tighten up the muscles in the mouth and throat and solve the problem. If that doesn’t work, your only other alternative is to revert to surgery.
